States Of Matter Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the properties of gas?
They can flow and be compressed into a smaller volume. They will expand to fill a container.
What are the properties of solids?
They have a fixed shape and volume. They cannot flow or be compressed.
What are the properties of liquids?
They flow and they will take the shape of their container. They can’t be compressed. If you cool them below 0° they will freeze.
What are particles?
Particles of the bits that make up matter. They could be molecules in water or atoms in gold.
What is the theory that establishes the particle arrangement in solid liquids and gases?
The kinetic theory.
What requires an increase in energy?
Melting, evaporation, and boiling
What requires a decrease in energy?
Condensing and freezing
What is sublimation?
When solids do not from liquids when heated but turn straight to gases for example carbon dioxide
