Statistical Testing Flashcards
(25 cards)
When is statistical testing used?
To see if a difference or association is statistically significant.
What does ‘significant’ mean?
Whether the result could have occurred by chance or if there is a real effect.
What are the three criteria for choosing a statistical test?
- Difference or correlation
- Related or unrelated
- level of measurement
Name the two levels of measurements
- Repeated measures
2. Matched pairs
When can you tell if a test is independent groups?
It’s unrelated
What is the anagram for the table?
Carrots Should Come Mashed With Swede Under Roast Potatoes
Draw out the table
On paper
What test should you use for unrelated nominal data?
Chi-squared
What test should you use for related nominal data?
Sign test
What test should you use for test of association nominal data?
Chi-squared
What test should you use for unrelated ordinal data?
Mann-Whitney
What test should you use for related ordinal data?
Wilcoxon
What test should you use for test of association ordinal data?
Spearman’s rho
What test should you use for unrelated interval data?
Unrelated T-test
What test should you use for related interval data?
Related T-test
What test should you use for test of association interval data?
Pearson’ r
Name all of the parts of the table in order
Chi-squared Sign test Chi-squared Mann-Whitney Wilcoxon Spearman's rho Unrelated T-test Related T-test Pearson's r
How can you tell if data is nominal?
It’s in categories
How can you tell if data is ordinal?
It’s in order
Name an example of nominal data
Someone naming their favourite food
Name an example of ordinal data
Getting someone to rate how much they like something on a scale of 1-10
Name an example of interval data
Studies include measuring time or temperature etc.
Which data is better interval or ordinal?
Interval data due to more detail being preserved as scores are not converted into ranks.
How to tell if it’s related data
Repeated measures and matched pairs
