raw data

as it is first collected in a statistical investigation before it has being sorted or ordered into quantitative or qualitative data

numerical data such as measures of height or weight

continuous - temperature
discrete - shoe size which can then be sorted into ordinal which is things like position in a race

pairs of related values of data such as exam and results and time spent studying

sets of three or more related data values such as, age, height and weight.

what are the advantages and disadvantages of primary data

advantage:
- collection method known
- accuracy known
- questionnaire or survey can be designed to find answers to specific questions

disadvantages:
- collection of data is time-consuming and expensive

what are the advantages and disadvantages of secondary data

advantage:
- easy and cheap and quick to obtain
- data from reliable resources like UK office of national stats is reliable

disadvantage:
- not always reliable
- data might have errors
- might not be suitable to find answers for specific questions
- collection method and sample size unknown
- data may be out-dated
