Q

The empty container problem

A

As we know the imbalance of trade creates surplus and shortage of containers in different regions. As you can see in tis graphic in the routes Europe-Asia and Europe- Central and South America, the imports exceed exports and therefore there are excess containers left in Europe. And in contrast, in the routes from Europe to North America, Sub Saharian Africa the Middle East and Australia there are more exports which leads to container surplus in those regions. Another important surplus happens in North America from the imbalance of imported goods from Asia.

Container repositioning

A

The empty container problem then makes it necessary to reposition those excess containers to the point where they are needed.
In The worlds container traffic, the largest number of containers in in the status of repositioning.
The repositioning of empty containers causes high costs and is and obstacle that affects port container terminals and inland carriers..
The Costs of empty container repositioning include inland transport, terminal storage and handling and tarnsport by sea to the port where empty containers needed for export are in short supply. According to the BCG, repositioning empty containers costs the shipping industry $15-$20bn a year.
A container spends 50% of its life empty or waiting to be repositioned to the point of demand.

Q

Participants in empty container logistics

A

Lets see the participants of the repositioning logistics. First we have the shipping lines: they want as high container turnover as possible, because container leasing costs or their own container depreciation are costs they need to cover and empty container will only generate expenditures. For terminal operators: empty container handling fees are usually lower than those for full container. Empty container traffic and occupation of terminal space is unacceptable for them so they usually need to provide their customers empty container yards out of the port because otherwise they lose competitiveness to other terminals.
For inland carriers as railway operators and river operators, empty container traffic means lower income.
The container leasing companies need to reposition buy their own the container on markets where empty containers are in demand.
For public authorities empty container traffic creates traffic congestion, pollution and noise, in addition to occupying inland container yards.
And a significant part of the costs is payed by importers’ and exporters’ and ultimately end consumers.

Q

Staxxon as a solution to the problem

A

Staxxon has created a folding container with which 5 containers takes the space of a single one, which reduces handling, storage and transportation costs and time.
Lets see how the Staxxon folds…The folding is horizontally in comparison to the vertical collapsing containers. As you see the process is fast it requires only two men and a forklift. which makes it possible to fold it outside of the port.

Advantages

A

the advantages of the staxxon container
first It Costs less to maintain and repair as they are made by materials that don’t corrode
In contrast to flat rack collapsible containers, Staxxon’s design allows the work to be done with a liftfork out of the port reducing port congestion
It Conforms to ISO standards
Provides environmental advantages as less trips are needed and carbon emissions can be reduced
Offers an attractive return on investment, in contrast to today’s container which is a growing operating expense.

Latest news

A

In the latest new I found it said that Staxxon`s container has failed to reach popularity because the industry still doubts about the durability and cost efficiency of foldable containers.
Last year some sample containers were being manufactured in Poland to be used in a route from Europe to Africa.
Staxxon is looking to partner with ocean carriers and terminal operators to make some trials.

Conclusions

A

Staxxon has tried to provide a solution for one of the biggest problems of the logistics industry but has been unable to take the place of the traditional shipping container which is now 61 years old now.
As u know we are talking about a very conservative industry with high cost competition which makes it difficult for startups such as Staxxon to create innovation and change.
