stem cells Flashcards
What are stem cells?
undifferentiated cells
What can stem cells do?
produce more undifferentiated cells and then they can differentiate into different cells
Where can stem cells be found?
human emryos also known as embryonic cells
What can embryonic stem cells do?
turn into any different cell
Do adults have stem cells?
they do but only in certain parts on the body like the bone marrow
What can adult stem cells only produce?
certain type of specialised cell e.g: blood cells
Why can stem cells be cloned?
So they can use them for medicine or research
Why are some people against stem cell research?
it is a human life
Why are they for stem cell research?
they believe that suffering patients are more important, some people argue that the unwanted stem cells are used in research, finding other sources for stem cells
what can embryonic cells be used for ?
replacing faulty cells in sick people. e.g: make nerve cells with people with parylysis. we can make an embryo with the same gene as the patient, which is called theraputic cloning
what are the risks of theraputic cloning
stem cells could be affected by a virus and could be passed on and make the patient sicker
what are plants cells tissues called?
meristems- where growth occurs- roots and shoots
what do the meristems contain?
stem cells that can differentiate into any type of plant cell
what time can meristems divide?
through there whole life
