Gastric juice
What is in gastric juice?
97% water and 3% enzymes and hydrochloric acid
What are the two enzymes in gastric juice?
Renin and pepsin
What does renin act on?
Milk
What does pepsin do?
It starts the digestion of all proteins except for milk

How is pepsin activated?
By hydrochloric acid
What is another name for acid reflux?
GERD

Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease
What foods cause GERD?
Acidic, Spicy, and Fried
What are the effects of GERD?
- An acidic taste comes up in your mouth

How can you prevent GERD?
By taking antacids

Mucus Glands
What do the mucus glands in the stomach do?
Protects the stomach from being digested by the pepsin
What is an ulcer?
A sore in the lining of the stomach
When does an ulcer occur?
When pepsin begins to digest the stomach
Why does an ulcer occur?
You do not have a lot of mucus in your stomach
What causes an ulcer?
Diet, Stress, and/or Bacteria
What bad dietary foods cause ulcers?
Acidic, Fried, and Spicy (GERD)
What can you do to stop stress?
Meditate, Listen to Relaxing Music, and Deep Breathing
