Storage Technologies Flashcards

Q

Optical

A

Optical storage medias uses technologies such as lasers. Laser beams are projected onto discs such as dvds and blu ray discs and if light is reflected back then the data is read as one, if light does not reflect then data is read as a 0. Lasers are used to read and write data onto and off of discs

Q

Magnetic

A

This technology is used in hard discs and tapes, data is stored on a magnetic which can be a disk or a tape. By writing the data using a write head the data can also be read using the read head

Q

Solid state

A

Solid state media is used in storage devices such as flash memory sticks. The name solid state is used because it doesn’t have any moving parts unlike the write head in a magnetic storage. Solid state is being increasingly used to replace magnetic and optical state storage especially in mobile devices when low power consumption and high speed access is advantageous
