After 1905 rev, tsar brings policies to weaken opposition and strengthen authority
Helped by Stolypin, ‘carrot and stick’, repression and reform
Violence reached nadir in 1911, before Stolypin assassination sparked influx of disorder
Fairly strengthened, 1905 events, Stolypin’s reforms, October manifesto/duma, repression.

Nature of events 1905

Tsar blamed for disastrous Russo-Japanese war
Many fed up with incompetent leadership so position weakened by riots
Strikes and terrorism from peasants, workers, minorities, liberals, students.
Eg Assassinations and soviets all defiance against tsar and weakening his position
Military regain control, eg St P soviet surrendered after 5 day siege, trotsky arrested
Working class suppressed and figureheads unable to promote rev
Trotsky: “although with a few broken ribs, had come out of the experience of 1905 alive and strong.”

October Manifesto / Duma

Octman promised peasants abolish redpay
Rural riots and land seizures decrease
Duma satisfied Liberals and Zemstva
However, first and second duma dominated by reformist parties
Openly critical of the tsar, wouldn’t pass Stolys LRs, demanded more power
Stoly rigged 1907 3rd duma election, minorities, peasants and workers last franchise
Duma heavily dominated by right wing parties who worked with tsar, LRs
John Hite “the concession of some basic rights, such as trade unions and wage increases, has ended the dangerous unrest of 1905”

Swift and public punishment, floggings, exile, Stolys necktie
Less riots due to fear in public
Gov response only angered public, eg mass riots after Lena Massacre 1912 (300 striking miners killed by gov)
Sparked outrage similar to Bloody Sunday, mass riots
Lynch: “the regimes terror tactics were both cause and effect of a dramatic increase in public disorder”
