Stress Flashcards
(14 cards)
Hans Selye definition of stress
the state manifested by a specific syndrome which consists of all nonspecifically induced changes within a biologic system
Selye’s general adaptation syndrome also known as
fight or flight syndrome
Selye’s stages of general adaptation syndrome
- alarm reaction stage
- stage of resistance
- stage of exhaustion
Selye: stage during which fight or flight initiated
alarm reaction stage
Selye: stage during which physiological response is used to adapt to stressor
stage of reisistance
Selye: stage when body responds to prolonged stress: adaptive energy is depleted; diseases of adaptation may occur
stage of exhaustion
hormones secreted by pituitary gland during initial fight or flight response
- ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone)
- ADH (vasopressin)
- Growth Hormone
- TSH (thyrotropic hormone)
- Gonadotropins
things increased by prolonged fight or flight (8)
increased:
-gluconeogenesis
-retention of Na & H2O
-BP (constriction of blood vessels)
-fluid retention
-serum glucose
-free fatty acids
-basal metabolic rate
-sex hormones initially
things decreased by prolonged fight or flight
decreased:
-immune response
-secretion of sex hormones (later)
-libido (impotence)
define adaptation
the process by which an individual’s response to change results in preservation of individual integrity or timely return to equilibrium
number of life change units indicating high stress in 6 mo. period or 1 yr. period
6 months: 300 LCU
1 year: 500 LCU
critiques of life change questionnaires (4)
don’t consider:
-person’s perception of events
-culture
-coping strategies used
-support systems
Lazarus and Folkman: 3 types of primary appraisals of events
-irrelevant
-benign-positive
-stress appraisal
Lazarus and Folkman:
stress appraisal types (3)
*harm or loss
*threatening (person sees possible harm or loss)
*challenging (person sees possible growth)
