major, inconsistent events that cause readjustment in someones life
what are 3 examples of life events?
- getting married
- moving house
- getting fired from a job

cause stress due to psychological readjustment they cause
how are life events measured?
Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS)
who created the Social Readjustment Rating Scale?
Holmes and Rahe
how does the Social Readjustment Rating Scale work?
- each event is given a Life Change Unit (LCU)
- aims to reflect the amount of adjustment is required
what is the link between LCUs and probability of developing ill health?
- <150 = 30% probability
- 150-299 = 50% probability
- > 300 = 80% probability
what are daily hassles?
minor irritations that happen frequently
what are 3 examples of daily hassles?
- losing your keys
- traffic
spilling coffee
how are daily hassles measured?
The Hassles and Uplift Scale (THAUS)
how does The Hassles and Uplift Scale work?
- lists 117 daily hassles into categories. eg. work, family, friends etc
- select the daily hassles yu have experienced and rank on a scale 1-3
- 1 being somewhat severe, 3 being extremely severe
who created The Hassles and Uplifts Scale?
Kanner et al
Why is it good that the SRRS and THAUS untilise self-report techniques?
- people are able to report their own experience and emotions
- gather personal insight into the source of a person’s stress
- valid way of assessing the cause of stress
what is the issue with the SRRS and THAUS relying on retrospective recall?
- some expriences are hard to remember
- impact of dailt hassles may be underestimated because of their frequency
might not accurately reflect impacts of life events and daily hassles on stress
why do life events impact individuals differently?
- factors like personality type influence the extent to which people are affected
- scales dont necessarily provide a valid prediction of stress related ill-health
