Structure And Bonding Flashcards
(32 cards)
What do atoms contains?
Neutrons, electrons and protons
What are the shells orbiting the nucleus?
Electrons
What is in the nucleus of an atom?
Protons and nuetrons
Number of protons =
Atomic number
Number of neutrons =
Mass number - atomic number
What do noble gases never form?
Chemical bonds
Why don’t noble gases for chemical bonds?
Their at9md all have full outer shell of electrons
What are the two ways atoms can get a full out shell?
Transferring electrons forming ions (ionic bonding)
Sharing electrons forming molecules (covalent bonding)
Where does ionic bonding only occur?
In compounds (not elements)
What must compounds contain?
A mental bonded to a non metal.
What do metal atoms always loose?
Their outer shell electrons to form a positive ion.
Where are electrons transferred in ionic bonding?
From a metal atom to a non-metal atom to form a positive metal atom and a negative non-metal atom.
What is ionic bonding?
An electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charge
What must the total number of electrons lost by the metal atoms be?
The same as the number gained by the non-metal atom.
Define molecular ions
A molecular ion is a group of atoms he,p together by covalent bonds with an overall charge.
NH(4)+
Ammonium ion
OH-
Hydroxide
NO-(3)
Nitrate
CO(3)[2]-
Carbonate
SO[2]-(4)
Sulfate
What are dot cross diagrams used to show?
How the electrons are transferred from the metal atoms to the non-metal atoms to form the positive and negative ions in an ionic compound.
Number of covalent bonds in group 0 (noble gases)
0
Number of covalent bonds in Hydrogen
1
Number of covalent bonds in group 7 (e.g F)
