Structure Of An Atom (chapter 1) Flashcards
(14 cards)
State three Dalton’s Atomic Theory [3]
-element are composed of extremely small particles called atom.
-all atoms are identical, having the same size, mas and chemical properties.
-compound are composed of atoms of more than 1 element.
Definition of Atom? [4]
-Atom is a basic unit of an element that can enter into chemical reaction.
-atom is neutral.
-atam is a substance that can enter chemical reaction.
-atom is a pure substance by ordinary process.
Component of Atomic Model [3]
1) nucleus (proton + neutron)
2) electron
3) shell
Definition of Molecule?
A molecule is an aggregate of two or more atoms in a definite arrangement held together by chemical forces
Means of Diatomic Molecule?
Contains only two atom.
Means of Polyatomic Molecule?
Contains more than two atom.
Definition of An Ion?
An ion is an atom or group of atoms that has a net positive or negative charge.
Means of Cation? [2]
-Ion with a positive charge (metal)
-If a neutral atom loses one or more electrons it become cation
Means of Anion? [2]
-Ion with a negative charge (non-metal)
-If a nuetral atom gains one or more electrns it become anion
Name of Cation and Anion [2]
-cation are named the same as metal
(ex: sodium to sodium ion)
-anion are named by changing the ending of the name to -ide
(ex: fluorine to fluoride)
Means of Monoatomic Ion?
Contains only one atom.
Means of Polyatomic Ion?
Contains more than one atom.
Form of Metals and Non-Metals? [2]
-Metals tend to form cation.
-Non-Metals tend to form anion.
Examples of Cation and Anion? [2]
-Sodium Chloride
(Cation is Na+)
(Anion is Cl-)
-Magnesium Nitrate
(Cation is Mg2+)
(Anion is NO3-)
