Structure of Kidney Flashcards
(5 cards)
Renal Artery & vein
The renal artery supplies oxygen and glucose and has a high concentration of urea
The renal vein removes carbon dioxide and has a lower concentration of urea
The ureter transfers urine to the bladder
Urine is released through the urethra
Kidney Dissection Risk Assessment
Hazard - scalpels are sharp
Risk - when slicing into the kidney, there is a risk of cutting or piercing the skin
Control - cut away from the body onto a white tile
Kidney - 3 visible regions
- Cortex is the outer region
- Medulla is organised into triangular renal pyramids
- The pyramids drain into the pelvis
Nephron
The nephron is the functional unit of the kidney
It is where blood is filtered and useful substances, such as glucose and water, are reabsorbed back into the blood
The glomerulus, Bowmans capsule, proximal convoluted tubule and distal convoluted tubule are located in the cortex
The loop of henle and collecting duct are located in the medulla
