student engineer Flashcards
When checking a locomotive’s MAP 100, what three things does the
MAP 100 validate?
That the inspection, brake test and train control system tests
remain valid.
Of the three tests, which one do we NOT use on the Coast Starlight or
Sunset Limited?
The train control system test.
The MAP 101 validates only one item, what?
The inspection.
If, as an Engineer, you were required to perform an inspection of your
Locomotive, what AMT-3 Rule do you refer to?
AMT-3 Rule 2.2 Locomotive Calendar Day Inspection Procedure
When Performed By Engineer.
How often does a locomotive require inspection?
Once each calendar day.
How often does a Cab Car require inspection?
Once each calendar day.
If a locomotive was inspected today, when does it need another
inspection to remain valid?
By 1159PM tomorrow.
Can you depart a location where a Locomotive Calendar Day
Inspection and Locomotive Departure Test were performed without a
MAP 100 or MAP 101?
No.
If a Locomotive Calendar Day Air Brake Test has not been performed
as indicated on the MAP 100, what is required and what Rule do you
refer to?
You must perform your own Locomotive Departure Test as per
Rule 2.3.
If you discover that your locomotive(s) were inspected yesterday and
you will be working on this equipment past midnight tonight, what is
required?
A Locomotive Calendar Day Inspection will be required before
1159PM tonight regardless if the train is delayed or not.
Does the Locomotive Calendar Day Inspection procedure require a
Locomotive Calendar Day Air Brake Test also?
Yes.
If the MAP 100 has expired (example: was signed the day before
yesterday), what is required before placing this locomotive in service if
no mechanical forces are available?
Engineer must perform inspection per Rule 2.2.
Prior to inspection, what must be done with the locomotive?
It must be secured.
Must the FRA “Blue Form” be displayed on the locomotive?
Yes.
What must be known about the safety devices listed on the MAP 100?
That they are properly positioned and sealed.
What are the three common safety devices found on locomotives?
a. Alertor.
b. Speedometer overspeed.
c. Event Recorder.
Who is responsible for applying the seals on the above devices?
The Mechanical Department.
If the seal numbers are not recorded, what is required?
Do not delay the train. Note that the seal numbers were not
recorded on the MAP 100.
What must be known about the locomotive’s cab lights and gauge
lights?
They must be operative and provide sufficient illumination.
Regarding the speedometer, what is the only thing that one can look
for while performing the daily inspection prior to departure?
That the speedometer and its related apparatus are not damaged.
If you discovered one bulb of the headlight burned out, would this
be considered as non-compliant?
No.
If you discovered one ditch light burned out on a locomotive,
would this be considered as non-compliant?
Yes.
If you discover that the radio does not operate as intended, what are
your options?
Either repair it, substitute another radio, or switch the locomotive to
a trailing position.
What two things must be done concerning just the locomotive when a
traction motor is cut out?
Locomotive must be isolated and switched to trailing position.
