what are studies for observations?
COVERT PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION:
1. James patrick glasgow gang
- was in the glasgow gang for 4 months
- joined in twelve times of their activities
- Humphrey’s tear room trade
- the men he observed were unaware they were being watched
- he acted as a watch queen to observe the men’s interactions - venkatesh “gang leader for a day”
- actively engaged in the daily life of the gang with knowledge and permission of the gang members
what are studies for experiments?

- study to show that media violence can cause children to act more aggressively when given the chance to do so
FIELD EXPERIMENTS:
1. rosenham “pseudo patient” experiment
- went to 12 californian mental hospitals to study the stigma attached to mental health
- individuals faked symptoms of schizophrenia
- went back second time and hospital werent able to identify who was faking it
- Rosenthal and jacobson
- fake iq test and chose a random 20% to tell teachers they were smarter
- came back a year later, the spurters were the highest achievers
- done study 242X
COMPARATIVE EXPERIMENTS:
1. durkheim’s study of suicide
- thought experiment in the mind of the researcher
- said that suicide was most likely amongst single people, childless couples etc
- Anna becker “television and eating disorders in fiji”
- wanted to see if the introduction of western tv would lead to an increase in unhealthy eating behaviours
- in 1998 (after the introduction of western tv), 74% of girls reported that they felt too big or too fat
what are some studies for questionnaires?
- schofield
- researched sexual behaviours of teenagers
- young girl was asked in questionnaire, “are you a virgin?” and she replied “no, not yet” - hite (study of love, passion and emotional violence)
- sent out 100,000 but only 4.5% returned
what are some interview studies?
UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWS:
1. oakley
- 178 women
- spent 9 hour with each woman to talk about parenting and childbirth
- ended up going to their births
- bott
- 20 couples on who shares roles (conjugal roles) within the family
- found couples who shared social networks (friends) more likely shared roles - crime survey for england and wales
- 75,000 in a year
- done to uncover dark figure of crime

- investigated institutional racism amongst police
- based on official stats from stephen lawrence case

- used letters and personal diaries from immigrants to find out how their identities changed once they moved to america
