Studies of the brain/ Neuro-imaging techniques Flashcards
(5 cards)
Split brain surgery
Involves cutting the main band of the nerve tissue connecting the two hemispheres, this reduces the severity of epileptic seizures.
CT scan def, adv + dis
An x-ray that produces 3D images of the brain and other structures of the body. Adv- safe, cost effective, identifies precise location of tumors. Dis- no info on function of the brain, x-rays emit radiation, images are in black and white.
PET scan def, adv + dis
Measures the volume and location of blood flow in the brain by tracking glucose. Adv- shows function of brain during motor and cognitive tasks, shows disease progression (alzhiemers). Dis- expensive, radioactive substances have short time limit, low resolution image.
MRI scan def, adv + dis
Uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce a computer-enhanced image of the brain structure. Adv- 3D detailed colour images, harmless magnetic fields are used. Dis- expensive, doesn’t provide info about function of brain, cannot be used with any metals placed in body.
fMRI scan def, adv + dis
Similar to MRI however also shows real time brain function by tracking blood flow and oxygen consumption. Adv- detailed info regarding brain function and structure, high resolution images. Dis- very loud and claustrophobic chamber.
