study cards Flashcards
to learn stuff about biodiversity (18 cards)
what is an invasive species
an invasive species is a living thing that is brought to a new habitat often causing damage to the new environment.
endangered species
endangered species are any type of plant or animal that is at risk of disappearing for ever.
community/ECOSYSTEM
the plants and animals that live together in a habitat form a community.
Organism
a single living thing
vertebrate
a vertebrate is an animal that has a backbone or spine
invertebrate
an invertebrate is any species without a backbone
4 Threats to Biodiversity
(HPOC)
Hungry Penguins order cookies
H- Habitat destruction
P - Pollution
O- Overhunting Overfishing
C - Climate Change
Physical Adaptation
A unique part on an animal that has a special function
Behavioural Adaptation
A unique thing animal does
List 3 reasons why Biodiversity is important
- more prey for animals
- more shelter
- better air and water quality
- more plants can grow
- animals and plants are healthier
- more food for humans
- better medicine can be developed
- prevents disease in animals
- helps bees pollinates
- helps ecosystems
Habitat Loss
animals lose their habitats through different things like forest fires, deforestation, hurricanes, chemical spills etc
Overfishing/Overhunting
Hunting too many organisms before the animals can reproduce to replace their population
Pollution
Allowing toxic chemicals into the air, water and soil
Climate Change
Climate change can affect the habitats and food sources of many species, making it harder for them to survive.
Prey
Animal that gets eaten by a larger animal in its food chain
Predator
An animal that eats the prey
Apex Predator
The animal at the top of its food chain. it is no one’s prey
Animal Classification
a system of organizing living things based on their traits
