In what ways do China’s rivers support large populations?
The rivers provide water and fertile soil for agriculture as well as the means for transportation and trade
How do Japan’s mountains and limited natural resources affect life in Japan?
The mountains force the Japanese people to crowd along the country’s plains. Because natural resources are limited, Japan must import many raw materials.
In what ways are North Korea and South Korea alike and different?
The countries have a similar geography but maintain different forms of governments, economic systems, and ways of life
How have Mongolians adapted to their harsh, dry environment?
Some Mongolians have adapted by becoming nomadic herders rather than farmers. Many people live in cities where the climate is less harsh.
What is a Dynasty?
A series of rulers from the same family that ruled China for thousands of years
What role did Dynasties play in China?
They fought other groups to maintain power and expand their lands. Most of the Dynasties also tried to unify their lands.
What are the basic teachings of Confucianism?
The teachings are based on respect and the proper conduct between father and son, elder brother and younger brother, husband and wife, friend and friend, and ruler and subject
How did the Silk Roads promote the exchange of goods and ideas?
People from Asia, Europe, and African traded on the land and maritime routes, introducing new goods and ideas to China

1600’s until 1800’s

It became a democracy, switched to a Market Economy, and strengthened economic ties with China

The Samurai protected the wealthy, landowning lords that hired them. They also contributed values of loyalty and hard work as well as artistic interests.
What is the Meiji Restoration and how did it industrialize Japan?
Japan consulted foreign experts and built its industries on Western models. After the Japanese government sold the industries to private investors, large, family controlled businesses developed.
What, if anything, did the Korean War accomplish?
It didn’t accomplish anything because at the end of the war, North and South Korea remained divided

Confucianism, Daoism, animism, and Shinto combined with Buddhism; traders and missionaries introduced Islam and Christianity

Chinese inventions have influenced today’s society in the areas of art, communication, government, exploration, economy, and warfare.

Economic reforms and Shanghai’s status as a Special Economic Zone helped fuel the city’s growth. As a result, Shanghai has become a center of finance, business, and trade

The large round eyes typical of many anime films were influenced by Western animated films’ Shinto nature spirits and elements of Buddhism and ancient Japanese myths are used in anime. It is popular because of its broad range of subject that appeal to many audiences

It has moved toward a market economy by establishing SEZs in coastal areas. The government exercises less government control and ownership of businesses in these areas

China introduced the one-child policy, which limited the number of children families could have to one or two

Decline in demand for exports, competition from other countries, and an aging population
What impact have the different governments and economic systems in North Korea and South Korea had on their people?
North Korea’s Communist government and controlled economy have repressed its people and given them a low standard of living. South Korea’s democratic government and market economy have given its people more freedom and a higher standard of living
