Processing Petroleum:
To make products out of petroleum it must be processed which includes Pumping petroleum is the first step, but what comes out of the pump is crude petroleum. So with the crude petroleum they then they heat the liquid until a gas/vapour comes off
The gas travels to a separate chamber. The gas is then cooled and turns into a liquid again. Petroleum is a group of materials that are soluble in each another but not in water. Each substance contracts at a varying temperature.Using distillation helps to spare the essential carbons that are needed for everyday living.
Desalinating Water:
There are multiple different methods for desalinating water including The Desert Tent Method, or as simple as boiling the sea water ( example ) and collecting the steam into another cup - now salt water free.
The desert tent method is expensive and it takes a long time. And is only practical in areas that receive a lot of bright sunlight
In general desalinated water is expensive and takes a lot of energy.
Pure Substance
only contain one type of particle, can exist in all three states, solid, liquid, and gas
mixture
Contains two or more pure substances
Heterogeneous Mixture
Heterogeneous means made up of parts or mixed, Example a rock far away might look grey, but when you come closer and look at it you might notice other colours such as pink, yellow, or black in the rock.
Homogeneous Mixture
Is a mixture that looks like it has one set of properties. Paint is a good example and so is a smoothie with different ingredients. Homogeneous means that all parts of a mixture are the same. Each portion of the paint or smoothie has equal parts of ingredients because it is well blended or mixed. A homogeneous Mixture is when no settling occurs is a Solution.
Suspension
is a heterogeneous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase. Particles are too small to be filters
Colloid
Are small enough particles are small enough to pass through most common filters.
Emulsion
a fine dispersion of minute droplets of one liquid in another in which it is not soluble
why does sugar dissolve in water
the sugar is a solute and the water is a soloution, the sugar particles are broken down from the water particles
saturated
which no more solute will dissolve in an amount of solvent at a specific temperature.
super saturated soloution
You can make it from some solutes making a saturated
the solution, then cooling it without stirring.
whats a universal solivent
water
whats a pro and con about desallinating water
pro: makes water clean and ok to drink
con: its expensive and takes a lot of time
What is a thermoplastic
Thermoplastic is a type of plastic material ( or polymer) that when is heated can be moved and bent into different shapes and wheel cooled holds the specific shape.
what happens when you try to add more solute to a saturated solution.
If you add too much solvent into the solute it dissolves
If there is more solute the particles that make up the solute will not have any particles to be attracted to. Thus the part particles on the solute will be left out of the solution
