Who is actually forgiving us in the confessional?
JESUS forgives us through the WORDS of the PRIEST.
How is Christ’s love different from human love?
Jesus’ love NEVER ENDS and it PURIFIES us.
Explain how the parable of the prodigal son is like the journey of a sinner from sin to repentance.
- The FATHER in the parable represents GOD, who WATCHES and WAITS for our return.
- The prodigal son is in a FOREIGN country, which represents a person who has STRAYED from God.
- The son is jealous that the PIGS have food, which symbolizes the SOUL starved to death without God’s grace.
- The father’s PATIENT LOVE represents God’s grace sent to motivate us to return to him.
To whom did Christ entrust the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Who has the authority to forgive sins now and how did they get it?
Christ entrusted the ministry of Reconciliation to the CHURCH. power has been passed down to bishops and priests through sacraments of HOLY ORDERS.
What sins are you required to tell the priest? Why should you tell more than those?
- tell priest every MORTAL SIN you are aware of for confession to be VALID.
- confess VENIAL SINS because confessing makes it easier to RECOGNIZE them.
What are the six elements of a good confession?
- EXAMINATION of conscience
- SORROW for SIN
- RESOLUTION to avoid sin in the future
- CONFESSION of sins
- MAKING an act of CONTRITION
- Doing the ASSIGNED PENANCE
When are you required to go to confession?
At least once a year or if we have a mortal sin.
How did sin come into the world?
From Adam, as ORIGINAL SIN. inherited from our parents at the MOMENT of our CONCEPTION.
How can our sins hurt others?
others may follow us into our sinning. Adam followed Eve, and changed to history of the human race!
What are the two consequences of mortal sin?
- Deprives us of COMMUNION with GOD.
- Deprives us of the PROMISE of ETERNAL LIFE we received in BAPTISM.
What are the main effects of the sacrament of penance? The sacrament of PENANCE:
- forgives sins and restores grace when lost by mortal sin
- remits eternal punishment
- imparts actual graces to avoid sin in future
- RECONCILES penitent person with Church
- Remits part of PURGATORIAL PUNISHMENT
- Gives PEACE of CONSCIENCE & SPIRITUAL CONSOLATION
