subdivisions of the nervous system Flashcards
(14 cards)
what are the two parts of the nervous system
1 - CNS
2 - PNS
What is included in the CNS
- spine
- skull
- the cortex
- spinal cord
- subcortical structures
- the bone that surround them
is the CNS good at fixing itself
NO - it is very poor at fixing itself
What is included in the PNS
- everything outside of the skull and spine
- ganglions
- nerves
what are the two subdivisions of the PNS
- inputs form the sensory division
- outputs form the motor division
what is the difference between afferent and efferent
afferent - inputs
efferent - outputs
what two subdivisions of the motor division called
- somatic motor system
- autonomic system
what does the somatic motor system control ?
it controls voluntary movement
what does the autonomic system control?
it controls the involuntary movements
e.g., controls the lungs the heart the smooth muscle and the exocrine and endocrine glands
what are the two sections of the autonomic system
- sympathetic
- parasympathetic
what’s the sympathetic system
its is the fight or flight response
what is the parasympathetic system
it is the rest and digest response
what senses are in the sensory system?
- Visual
- Auditory
- Olfactory (smell)
- Gustatory (taste)
- Tactile (feel)
– but also – - Vestibular (sense of head movement in space)
- proprioceptive (sensations from muscles and joints of the body)
what are the three steps of motor control?
- sensory input - receptors monitor changes
- integration - decision made about what should be done
- motor output - affecter organs are activated
