Sugar derivatives Flashcards
(7 cards)
Sugar acids
When aldehyde or OH group is oxidised to form a COOH.
Types of sugar acids
Aldonic acid = C1 ocidation
Uronic acid = C6 oxidation
Aldaric acid = C1 and C2 oxidation
Sugar alcohols (Polyols)
Aldehyde or ketone group is reduced to OH (example mannitol xylitol)
Deoxy sugars
One or more OH groups replaced by H
Sugar phosphate
Monosaccharides with one or more phosphate groups attached. Phosphorylation occurs at OH groups usually at C1,5 or 6.
Amino sugars
Monosaccharides where one or more -OH group/s are replaced by an amine (-NH₂) group, usually at C2. Often found in modified forms, such as N-acetyl derivatives
Reducing sugars
Sugar that reduces another compound and is itself oxidised (loses Oxygen).
Free anomeric carbon
