Q

Name 4 uses of sulphur and 3 uses of sulphur dioxide

A

Sulphur:
Food preserver; kills bacteria
Bleach in manufacture of wood pulp for paper
Car batteries
Manufacture of sulphuric acid (contact process)

Sulphur dioxide:
Manufacture of sulphuric acid
BLeach wool/silk/wood pulp for making paper
Sterilising agent in making soft drinks and jam/drying fruit; stops growth of bacteria and molds

Q

Describe the process of manufacturing sulphuric acid through the Contact Process

A

Sulphur is burned in air producing sulphur dioxide
Mixed with more air and passed over to four separate beds of catalyst: vanadium oxide, at 450 degrees celsius to form sulphur trioxide
Dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid, forming thick fuming liquid called oleum
Mixed carefully with water to form concentrated sulphuric acid

Q

What are the 4 properties of Sulphuric acid

A

Forms salts called sulphates
Dehydrating agent and a thick oily liquid when concentrated
Turns blue litmus paper red
