Summer Exam 25 Flashcards
(20 cards)
5 major effects of climate change
Hotter temperatures
Stronger storms
Rising sea levels
Harming wildlife
Droughts and water shortages
What is plucking
when water in a glacier melts and then refreezes around rock, and then lifts and
transports pieces of rocks as the glacier moves
What is Abrasion
jagged pieces of rock stuck into the slide of the glacier cut and scrape the sides
and the floor of the valley
What are Cirques/Corries
An arm-chair shaped hollow
What is a tarn
Jagged ridge, which is formed when two corries lie side by side.
What is a Pyramidal Peak
When 3 or more corries form along the sides of same mountain
What is a U-Shaped Valley
Once a V-shaped valley. Has a wide, flat floor and steep sides.
What is a Ribbon Lake
a long, narrow lake on the floor od a u-shaped valley.
Paternoster lakes
a chain of ribbon lakes, joined together by a stream
What are Hanging Valleys
smaller glaciated valley that hangs above the main glaciated valley.
What are Fjords
When a glacier melts, seawater rushes in to flood the valley. The drowned glacial
valleys.
Moraine
material transported by glaciers
Supraglacial moraine
is carried along on top of the glacier, as if on a slow-moving conveyor
melt. Most of the material comes from weathered material on the sides of the valley.
Englacial moraine
is carried along the ground beneath a glacier.
Subglacial moraine
is carried along the ground beneath a glacier.
Boulder Clay
is the material deposited directly by the glacier. It made up of clay, sand, and
stones.
Erratic
A large boulder
Drumlins
are oval-shaped mounds that are formed from boulder clay.
