Sun, Moon, and Stars Flashcards
(16 cards)
The sun is a ____.
star
Why does the Sun appear much bigger and brighter than other stars?
Because it is much closer to Earth
Where does the sun rise and set?
The sun rises in the east, and sets in the west
Why can’t we see the Sun in the sky all the time?
We can’t see the Sun all the time because the Earth rotates. As it turns, only one side of the Earth faces the Sun at a time, causing daytime on that side and nighttime on the other.
How does the time of daylight change over the course of one year?
Summer has longer days, winter has shorter days
Right or wrong: The moon appears in the sky both during the day and the night.
Right –> The moon is NOT only a night sky object. The sun’s bright light just makes the moon sometimes harder or even impossible to see during the day.
Where does the moon rise and set?
Like the sun, the moon rises in the east, and sets in the west
What is the difference between the perceived movements of the sun and the moon?
The moon actually moves around the Earth in a path, the sun’s movement is perceived because of Earth’s rotation.
Name the four moon phases?
Full moon, quarter moon, crescent, new moon
Why can we see stars even though they are so far away from Earth?
Because they make their own very bright light which travels a long way through space to reach our eyes.
What star constellation can you see here?
Big Dipper
What star constellation can you see here?
Scorpion
What is a planetarium?
A planetarium is a building with a big dome where you can see stars, planets, and the sky on screen — just like you’re looking up at real space.
What are people called that study space?
Astronomers
Who were Shi Shen, Gan De, and Wu Xian?
Chinese astronomers who lived over 2000 years ago and mapped out the positions of stars.
Who was Galileo Galilei and what did he do?
Italian astronomer who lived 400 years ago. He discovered objects in the sky with a telescope and found out that there were much more stars which were invisible to the human eye.
