Sundarbans Case Study Flashcards
(8 cards)
Where is Sundarbans located
South West Bangladesh at Bay of Bengal
Coastal Process in sundarbans
- Tidal action is primary coastal process
- non-cohesive sediment are washed out of delta and deposited in banks, where winds blow them into sand dunes, with dunes protected, finer silt washed into the bay are deposited, forming new islands. Vegetations develops, forming mangrove forests.
Describe how mangrove forests provides opportunities to Sundarbans. (List 3)
Mangrove forests could be cleared for shrimp/rice farming.
Mangrove forests are nesting and migrationary sites for hundreds of birds and animals
Mangrove forests provides goods and services if used sustainably
What are the risks in Sundarbans?
Cyclones, human eating tigers, high levels of salinity in soil. Destructive fishing techniques, resource use conflicts. Pollution of coastal waters by industry.
How humans responded to the risks in Sundarbans?
Plant more mangroves (help prevent flooding and improve water quality).
Providing prey by releasing captive bred pigs to prevent tiger attacks
In 2015, approximately 1010 cyclone shelters were built in vulnerable locations, which impact lives of 4 million in Sundarbans.
When was Bangladesh ICZM introduced?
2005
What are the solutions of challenges to Sundarbans?
- Salt tolerant rice varieties that can survive being submerged in sea water for over two weeks
- Distrubuting water tight containers to store important belonings during floods
What are the potential sustainable development in Sundarbans?
- Eco-tourism in Mangrove forests
- Coastal green belt policy planted 9000km of vegetation
