Superfamily Physalopteroidea
A
- Stomach worms of reptiles, birds, and mammals
- Present in canids, felids, and raccoons
- Large (4-6 cm)
- White or pink worms
- Anterior firmly embeds in the stomach mucosa
- Resemble ascarids
- -Can differentiate by observing the vomitus of a dog or cat
- Two pseudolabia
- Cephalic collarette (used to embed in the stomach mucosa)

- 42-53 x 29-35 um
- Broadly oval
- Clear and colorless
- Thick shell
- Larvated (shed in the feces)

Physaloptera life-cycle
A
- Adult parasites are in the stomach
- Eggs - L1 (infective)
- L1 to L3 in the intermediate host
- Direct host ingests intermediate host
- Larvated egg can also be picked up by the paratenic host (no development occurs in this host)

A
- Multifocal hemorrhagic gastritis
- Catarrhal gastritis
- Vomiting
- Anorexia
- Weight loss
- Melena
- Anemia

Physaloptera diagnosis
A
- Difficult
- -Low worm burden
- -Eggs are transparent
- -Difficult to see in sugar flotation
- Endoscopy
- Fecal exam
- Sedimentation is preferred method
- Centrifugation with Sheather’s may work
- Adults present in vomitus

Physaloptera treatment and control
A
- Fenbendazole
- Ivermectin
- Pyrantel pamoate
- Endoscopic removal of worms
- Control is difficult (intermediate host and paratenic host, see life-cycle)
