Basin
Filled with sterile water, to soak instruments
Wrapped sterilely to be opened on a ring stand
Graduate Pitcher
Filled with 100mL of saline for irrigation from & around wounds
Irrigation fluid is recorded to Anesthesiologists for EBL
Small Bowl
Used on the back table for variety of reasons ; specimens, dye, sponge
even if empty kept on back table for use can arise at any minute
Kidney Basin
Extra bowl that can be used at techs discretion
Used as a cath spillover saline when wound is irrigated
Medicine Cup
Hold medications on the back table
Drugs are poured into medicine cup by circulating nurse, sterilely
Asepto Bulb Syringe
Used to retrieve a “washing” specimen
Filled with 120cc of saline for irrigation
Bulb Syringe
Filled with 60cc of saline for irrigation
To irrigate delicate structures, nose, ear, and hands
Bovie Pad
Pad is single use, used non sterile manner
Applied to patient’s skin over muscular, hair free surface, non-bony, by circulating nurse
Bovie Pencil
Used to cauterize blood vessels and cut tissue
End of the cord is passed to circulating nurse to be plugged in to bovie machine
Bovie Tip
Tips are interchangeable
Are considered a sharp and disposed of in sharps container
Bovie Scratch Pad
Used to clean char from bovie tip
Adhesive back to secure drapes near operative fields on the mayo stand.
Needle Mattress
Used needles are stuck in the magnetic strip of mattress during case
Each numbered block gets one needle, needle count at the end keeps the needles safe.
Lap Sponges
Comes in a pack of 5
Used for cases with large amounts of blood, large incision
May be moistened with saline & used as a “pack” to retract and protect operative viscera
Tail Sponges
Comes in a pack of 5
Used often during hysterectomies to pack bowel away
Radiopaque band that runs through it, incase a sponge is lost during case
Tonsil Sponges
Comes in a pack of 5
Cotton-filled gauze used during tonsillectomy to pack the bed
Loaded and passes on Schnidt clamp
Kitners and Peanuts
Comes in a pack of 5
Used for blunt dissection in small areas
Tiny sponges are attached to a clamp when placed on the mayo stand
Cottonoid Sponge
Comes in a pack of 10
Soaked in hemostatic agent then applied to tissue to constrict blood vessels
Used to remove fluid from around delicate tissue by moistening with saline
Raytec Sponges
Comes in a pack of 10
For cases with small incisions and minimal blood loss
May be folded and loaded on a sponge stick if used below the fascia layer
Rubber Shod
Comes in a pack of 10
Used to grasps sutures without damaging
Designed to slide onto the tips of hemostatic clamps
Syringe
Used to draw up administer medications or fluids
Measured in milliliters
Hypodermic Needles
Must be counted
Needles are numbered according to size in diameter
Light Handles
Used sterilely and to adjust operative lights during surgery
Will be attached to spot lights and will be the only sterile place on the light
Marking pen w/ Labels and Ruler
Writing on skin, labeling medication or writing needs
Disposed of at the end of the case, new ones for new case
Suction Tubing
Used for suctioning things such as fluid, blood, and smoke
End of adapter is passed of to the nurse to plug into canister.
