A

MIND- Aim is to help people live their best life through one to one support and counselling.
AGE UK-This support group run activities and events for older people.
HEADWAY-Support and guidance for individuals have had head and brain injury’s.

What are the three main providers of advocacy services and how do they support individuals?

A

SEAP-This advocacy service helps resolve issues about an individuals health and well-being.
MENCAP-This is for people with learning disabilities to try and support them and also try make them more independent and speak for themselves.
Empower me- Supports mental health service users and people with learning difficulties to have a voice, which allows them to challenge stigma, and promote social inclusion and community cohesion.

what are the different types of informal support and how could they help individuals?

A

If an individual needs informal support they can go to friends and family etc. they can help you in any way you want and what is best for you. They should aim to give you the best possible advice whilst making you feel comfortable and safe, showing dignity and respect.

A support group is an organisation dedicated to helping people deal with a problem. Typically help with illness, job loss and addiction.
They can also help people achieve a goal in life.

Advocacy services support vulnerable people to make decisions and have their voice heard when decisions are being made about their lives.
They help individuals by supporting their rights.

A

You can contact social services at your local council and ask about advocacy services.
service fees will vary depending on the services provided. if they are set up by an organisation or council it will usually charge by the hour, the amount will depend on the type of service you choose.

A

MIND- mind is a mental health charity with voluntary work so it will not cost do go to the support group. it can be accessed by finding a support group near you and making a call or email to join the group.
AGE UK- Some aspects of age uk does cost but there is a free advice line which is a confidential service open everyday. They deliver a range of programmes across the UK that provide activities for older people to join and go to.
HEADWAY- There are 120 groups in the uk that you can contact if you have survived a brain injury. However patients may be referred by the NHS. It is charity work so is likely not to charge.

How are the three providers of advocacy services accessed and do they cost?
(MENCAP, SEAP and Empower me)

A

MENCAP- This service does cost and the local authority will decide how much you pay by doing different financial assessments. They offer a range of unique services for people with learning disabilities, families and carers. MENCAP direct is the best way to find out about the service and how to access it.
SEAP- You can access this by contacting your local seap team by calling them or following a link through the website.
Empower me-all the 24/7 helpline to be directly connected to a trained counsellor—the person answering the phone is not an operator, administrator, or receptionist. Log in to the Empower Me website and use “Studentcare” as the password. This is a charity so it is free.

How are the different providers of support groups funded?

A

MIND- They are responsible for their own funding.
HEADWAY-they have the ‘headway emergency fund’ which grants up to £500 to help families. Headway itself is funded by the crerar hotel group.
AGE UK- This support group is funded by charity shops as it runs over 400 and operates a social lottery and raffle which gives all profits to AGE UK to fund the charitable work.

SEAP- It is funded by local authorities.
Empower me- It is a charity so it s free as it is voluntary work

A

Support groups are usually voluntary so they do not usually cost as it is someone trying to help in their spare time. However if it is set up by organisations it may sometimes cost but only a small amount.
