Surface Water Flashcards
(10 cards)
Watersheds (drainage basins)
Watershed is essentially same as drainage basin, all the areas that drained by gravity into a body of water, smaller watersheds usually exist within large watersheds
Drainage divides
High area that separates watersheds
Weather related event that causes most deaths

Point source pollution
?The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines point source pollution as “any single identifiable source of pollution from which pollutants are discharged, such as a pipe, ditch, ship or factory smokestack” (Hill, 1997). Factories and sewage treatment plants are two common types of point sources
Non point source pollution
?Nonpoint Source (NPS) pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground, it picks up and carries natural and human-made pollutants, depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters and ground waters.
Relationship of amount of impervious surface and timing
?As impervious surface increases in urban areas, so does runoff. … addition to contamination, the amount of runoff increases with urbanization.
Amount of water in flooding events (diagram shown in class and on handout)
Where there are plants and no urbanization the level of discharge doesn’t go as high and comes later(longer lag time)
Where there are houses streets and roads, urbanization, it doesn’t take long to flood, level of discharge goes higher , flood Peak higher and lag time is not long
General situation in the Wilson’s Creek drainage basin
Comparison before and after last expansion of WE waste water treatment plant, effect also of urbanization
