Define Sustainability
*Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.
What are the three dimensions of sustainability?
*Social
*Environmental
*Economic
Describe Economic Sustainability (include how it improves/promotes health and wellbeing)
*Ensures average incomes in all countries are adequate to sustain a decent standard of living & continue to rise in line with inflation & living costs in the future.
*EXAMPLE: promoting health resources such as food, education & healthcare. This has a flow on affect to promoting physical health and wellbeing through nutrition which promotes mental health and wellbeing through feelings of self worth.
Describe Social Sustainability (include how it improves/promotes health and wellbeing)
*Creating an equitable society that meets the needs of all citizens & can be maintained indefinitely.
*EXAMPLE: genders are equal which promotes social health & wellbeing through the empowerment of women.
Describe Environmental Sustainability (include how it improves/promotes health and wellbeing)
*Ensuring the natural environment is used in a way that will preserve resources into the future.
*EXAMPLE: low income country uses a river to feed family or make money, if overfished it will prevent generations to meet their own needs.
Describe the interrelationship between the three dimensions of sustainability
*Social & economic sustainability depend on environmental sustainability.
*EXAMPLES: Poverty reduction is a part of social sustainability, but to achieve this, relies on economic sustainability.
-Access to safe water which is an aspect of social sustainability relies on environmental sustainability.
