sustainability and preservation Flashcards
(12 cards)
what are 3 facts about the predator pray relationship
size of predator prey population fluctuates
more prey then predators
sizes of prey populations will change before predator population
what is conservation
human actions to help increase biodiversity
what is meant by sustainable management
natural resources can be used by humans without them running out and maintaining biodiversity
what is meant by preservation
protecting an area by not letting people on it
what are 3 benefits of conservation
ethical- all animals have the right to live- ensure humans are still able to experience the natural ecosystem
social- enjoy the outdoors- good for physical and mental health
economic- medicines, food , timber sourced from natural ecosystems and tourism
what are 4 features of sustainability
enough resources for future generations
enable less economically developed countries to develop
balance consumption of resources between high and low economically developed country
preserve the environment
what are 2 examples of small-scale timber production
coppicing and pollarding
what is some strengths and a weakness of coppicing
easy and quick as more branches grow quickly and cut at the base
rotational, after one area has been cut then the next, so the trees have time to grow before being cut again
shorter- prevents succession so trees can’t dominate so biodiversity is remained
- as they are cut shorter they can be easily eaten or destroyed
what are some strengths and weaknesses of pollarding
higher up cut so can’t be eaten or destroyed easy but harder to cut down and grow less branches
what is an example of large scale timber production
felling
what are some problems with felling and what should be done instead
clear large areas which may not regrow due to destruction and soil erosion
instead- selective cutting - non-endangered trees
replanting- with distance - avoids competition
manage pests- grow well
protect areas for the locals to enjoy
what are 4 ways of sustainable fish farming
fish quotas- avoid overfishing
larger nets- only get mature fish
restrict time of year- avoid mating season
fish farming- maintain protein supply- large fish - prevent loss of wild species
