Swallow Maneuvers Flashcards
(18 cards)
indication of effortful swallow
reduced BoT contraction, pharyngeal residue, reduced pharyngeal contraction
purpose of effortful swallow
increase posterior motion of the BoT during the swallow
contraindications of effortful swallow
cardiac problems, arterial stenosis
purpose of mendelsohn swallow
elevate the larynx for a longer duration, increase CP opening
indication of mendelsohn swallow
reduced laryngeal movement and subsequent CP opening
contraindications of mendelsohn swallow
neck or pain injury
purpose of supraglottic swallow
close the airway at the level of the VF before and during swallow, clear residue after swallow
indication of supraglottic swallow
delayed or reduced airway closure, delayed pharyngeal swallow, poor oral control of liquids with premature loss into pharynx
contraindications of supraglottic swallow
stroke or CAD
purpose of super supraglottic swallow
close the airway at the level of the VF before and during swallow, increase BoT retraction and pressure generation, clear residue after swallow
indications of super supraglottic swallow
penetration into the airway with aspiration after swallow
contraindications of super supraglottic
stroke or CAD
- with liquid/chewed food on tongue, press entire surface of tongue firmly against the mouth
- begin the swallow, maintain firm tongue to palate pressure and squeezing throat muscles
effortful swallow
swallow awareness:
1. place hand over adams apple
2. swallow
prolonged elevation
1. swallow and deliberately hold larynx in elevated position for 2 seconds
2. release
3. repeat
mendelsohn
- take bit or sip
- inhale deeply and hold breath
- swallow while holding breath
- cough immediately after swallow
- breathe
supraglottic
- hold liquid/chewed food in mouth
- inhale deeply
- hold breath
- bear down and swallow
- cough immediately after swallow
- swallow hard again
- breath
super supraglottic
- gently hold tongue out with teeth
- swallow
masako
isometric (sustained)

3. hold position for ___ seconds
4. release. repeat 3 times and rest 1 min between repetitions
isotonic (repetitive)
1. lie flat on back without a pillow
