Switch Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a switch?
A network switch is a multiport network bridge that uses hardware addresses to process and forward data at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model.
What’s another name for layer-3 switches?
Multi-layer switches
How do switches differ from routers?
switches create a network and routers connect a network (i.e. while switches allow different devices on a network to communicate, routers allow different networks to communicate).
What can switches be used to connect?
computers, printers, phones, cameras and servers in a building
What are the two types of ethernet switches?
managed and unmanaged
Describe a managed switch
is configurable
offers greater security, flexibility, and capacity than an unmanaged switch.
You can monitor and adjust a managed switch locally or remotely, to give you greater network control.
Describe an unmanaged switch
not configurable
fewer features and less network capacity than managed switches
usually found in home networking equipment.
