What are some emotional characteristics of phobias?
Fear, anxiety and panic, which are often irrational and extreme.
How can the emotional response of a phobia be triggered?
By the presence, or the anticipation of a specific object or situation.
What are some cognitive characteristics of phobias?
- Irrational thinking.
- Catastrophising
- Ruminate thoughts.
- Selective attention towards the phobic stimuli.
What are some behavioural characteistics of phobias?
- Avoidance and withdrawal.
- Aggression or freezing. (fight or flight response)
What are some emotional characteristics of depression?
- Low mood, feelings of sadness.
- Loneliness.
- Guilt.
- Hopelessness and worthlessness.
- Anger towards themselves or others.
- Loss of interest.
What are some cognitive characteristics of depression?
- Irrational negative thoughts
- Catastrophizing of situations.
- Difficulty to maintain concentration.
- Recurrent thoughts of self-harm, death or suicide.

- Loss of energy leading to reduced activity.
- Sleep disturbance (hypersomnia or insomnia).
- Changes in appetite which could lead to significant weight gain or loss.
