Synaptic Transmission Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is synaptic transmission?
The process by which neighbouring neurons communicate with each other by sending chemical messages across the gap (synaptic cleft) that separates them.
Signals within neurons are transmitted electrically but signals between neurons are transmitted chemically via synaptic transmission.
What happens to electrical impulses after transmission?
When impulse reaches end of neuron (presynaptic terminal) it triggers release of neurotransmitter from tiny sacs called synaptic vesicles.
What are neurotransmitters?
Brain chemicals released from synaptic vesicles that relay signals across the synapse from one neuron to another.
What happens once the neurotransmitter crosses synaptic cleft?
It
