Synovial Joints Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the synovial joint

A

Cavities between bones are filled with synovial fluid. This fluid helps lubricate and protect the bones.

Q

What does gliding (plane) do

A

It is a nonaxial movement (slipping or gliding movements only). This occurs in the intercarpal, intertarsal joints & sacroiliac joints.

Q

What does the hinge (ginglymus) joint do

A

It is a uniaxial movement. A hinge joint permits only flexion and extension. The elbow, knee, phalanges and ankle are examples of this type of joint.

Q

What does the pivot (trochoid) joint do

A

It is a uniaxial movement. These joints allow only rotation around a single axis. Atlas/axis joint and Proximal and distal radio ulnar joint are an example of the pivot (trochoid) joint.

Q

What does the ellipsoid (condyloid) do

A

It is a biaxial movement at right angles to each other. Examples include the metacarpophalangeal joints (knuckles) and the Atlanto-Occipital joint.

Q

What does the saddle (sellar) joint do

A

It is a biaxial movement. The carpometacarpal joint between the trapezium and the first metacarpal (thumb) and sternoclavicular joint.

Q

What does the ball and socket joint do

A

It is multiaxial movement. This joint In a ball-and-socket joint, the round head of one bone rests within the cup-shaped depression of the another bone. The hip and the shoulder joints are examples of this type of bond.
