synovial joints Flashcards
(4 cards)
the rounded end of one bone fits into a sleeve or ring of bone (and possibly ligaments); uniaxial joint for it can only turn around its long axis
pivot joint
egg-shaped articular surface of one bone fits into an oval concavity in another; allow the moving bone to travel (1) from side to side and (2) back and forth, but the bone cannot rotate around its long axis
condylar joint
each articular surface has both convex and concave areas; allow essentially the same movements as condylar joints
saddle joint
spherical head of one bone fits into the round socket in another; allow movement in all axes, including rotation, and are the most freely moving synovial joints
ball and socket joint
