Systems Flashcards
(20 cards)
water vapour is the most important
greenhouse gas and is a major driving factor in determining climate change
both the water and carbon cycles can be studied by
considering them as systems
a flow/transfer is
a from of linkage between one store and another that involves movement of energy or mass
an input is
the addition of matter and/or energy into a sysem
a store is
a part of the system where energy/mass is stored or transformed
a system is
a set of interrelated components working together towards some kind of process
a model is
a simplified way of looking at a complex process, such as the water cycle diagram
a system is a type of
model
systems include a series of
stores with connections between them
the three properties of a system are
elements, attributes and relationships
elements are
the things that make up a system
attributes are
the perceived characteristics of the elements (basically what the elements do)
relationships are
descriptions of how various elements (and their attributes) work together to carry out a process
all systems have (4 items) in common:
- have a structure that lies within a boundary
- they are a generalisation of reality (simplified versions without great detail)
- function with inputs and outputs of material that is processed within the elements causing it to change it some way
- involve the flow of material between stores
materials are
matter and/or energy
an isolated system is
a system with no interaction beyond its boundary. there is no input or output of either energy nor matter
closed systems are
systems where only energy can be inputted r outputted beyond the boundary. matter does not cross the boundary
open systems are
systems where both matter and energy can be transferred from the system across the boundary into the surrounding environment
the water cycle is a …….system
closed
the carbon cycle is a ……system
closed
