systems in action Flashcards
(37 cards)
what’s the definition of a system?
a group of parts that work together to preform a task.
what is a physical system?
a system made of parts.
what is a social system?
a system made of people or living organisms.
what’s the definition of a force?
a push or pull that acts on an object
what is a contact force?
a contact force must touch the object it is acting on.
what is an action-at-a-distance force?
a force that act on an object without touching it.
what’s the definition of friction?
a force that resists the motion, usually two surfaces rubbing against eachother.
what’s the definition of mass?
the amount of matter in an object.
what’s the definition of weight?
How heavy something is due to gravity.
what’s the definition of work?
work is done when a force causes an object to move a distance.
what’s the definition of energy?
the ability to do work.
what is Kinetic Energy?
The energy of an object in motion.
what is potential energy?
stored energy
what’s the definition of a machine?
Any mechanical system that reduces the force required to accomplish work.
what is input/effort force?
the force applied to the machine.
what is the output/load force?
the force that applies to the object.
What is the maximum amount of pulleys used to preform a task?
You can use 4 pulleys to maximize the MA.
Name all 6 different simple machines.
LIPSWWa
Lever, Inclined Plane, Pulleys, Screw, Wedge, Wheel and Axle.
Name a lever example that is greater than 1.
Nutcracker, Bottle opener, Scissors, ect.
(Any class 1 or 2 lever.)
Name a lever example that is equal to 1.
Single fixed pulley or Seesaw.
Name a lever example that is less than 1.
Tennis racket, Hockey stick, Baseball bat, ect.
(Any class 3 lever.)
