CBT for sz
Key elements CBT :
-Cognitive approach - how a person thinks
-Learning approach - to change behaviour (e.g. reinforcement)
Commonly used to treat patients with SZ usually in 5-20 sessions
Irrational thoughts
CBT helps clients identify irrational thoughts and change them.
Managing symptoms - people with sz have coping skills, so are vulnerable to stress which then triggers relapse
Altering how a person thinks can help prevent decompensation (decline from normal functioning into a psychotic episode)
Self-awareness is enhanced by the therapist by helping the client understand more about their condition- to recognise specific situations preceding decompensation and learn to use coping strategies
