T2 Flashcards
Atom
Smallest particle of a chemical element.
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler one.
Atomic Number
of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic Mass
The # of protons + # of neutrons.
Shell
An orbit the electrons of an atom follow.
Valence Electrons
The electrons on the outermost orbit.
Why Ions form
To have a full valence electron shell; to be stable.
Monatomic Ion
An ion consisting of one atom.
Polyatomic ion
A covalent bond between two or more atoms with an overall charge.
Ionic bond
A bond between two atoms, one requiring a loss and the other requiring a gain in electrons.
Ionic compound
A chemical compound made of ions held together through ionic bonding.
MASH
Metal + Acid -> Salt + Hydrogen Gas
BASH
Base + Acid -> Salt + H2O
CASHCO
Carbonate + Acid -> Salt + H20 + CO2
Acid
A substance with pH less than 7.
Base
A substance with pH greater than 7.
Carbonate
A salt of carbonic acid.
Salt
Any chemical compound formed from the reaction of an acid with a base.
Arrangement of Periodic Table
Rows are called periods and have the same number of electron shells. Columns are called groups and have the same number of valence electrons.
Learn periodic table groups.
