A

Increase insulin secretion from B cells (phase 1 spike)
Act by INHIBITING K(ATP) channels
Orally absorbed
Excreted via kidney
Adverse effects: hypoglycaemia, weight gain

What do biguanides do?

A

Increase insulin mediated peripheral glucose uptake
decrease hepatic glucose production
cause small decrease in LDL level and TAGs
acting by ACTIVATING AMP kinase
adverse effects: GI disturbances, no weight gain. Contraindicated in pts with impaired renal function
