On the first day of suffering from cold damage, tai yang would be invaded. If the pulse is unchanged, it indicates that the disease has not changed. If a patient feels slight nausea or seems to have agitation and vexation, and the pulse becomes rapid and urgent, these symptoms indicate that the disease has changed.

In Tai Yang disease, if there is fever, thirst and absence of aversion to cold, it is called warm pathogen disease. If there is scorching hot on the body after promotion of sweating, this is called wind-warmth. The manifestations of wind-warmth are a floating pulse on the distal position and proximal position, spontaneous sweating, general heaviness, somnolence, stertorous breathing and difficulty speaking. If purging were used, there would be abnormal urination, staring eyes and fecal incontinence. If a fire method were used, the skin would turn to yellow in a mild scenario; in a severe scenario, there would be convulsion and periodic spasmodic jerking like epilepsy. If the fuming method was used, this would be another mistreatment. One mistreatment could still leave a few days for patients. Two mistreatments would speed up the death process for patients

Q

When a disease presents with fever and aversion to cold, it indicates that the disease occurs in yang; when a disease presents with aversion to cold but the absence of fever, it indicates that the disease takes place in yin. The disease that occurs in yang can resolve in seven days, while the disease that takes place in yin can resolve in six days, because seven isa yang number while six is a yin number.

A

In tai yang disease, a headache has lasted for more than seven days and then the patient automatically recovers. This is because tai yang disease has gone through its first regular course. if it is about to go on for the second course, foot yang ming should be needled to stop this continuation, and then there will be recovery.

The pathology of zhong feng syndrome in tai yang disease is floating yang and weakness of yin. Floating yang produces a fever, weakness of yin makes spontaneous sweating. The patient has aversion to cold that makes them huddle up, aversion to wind as if their body is splashed with cold water, gentle fever as if their body is covered with feathers, sneezing or hoarse breathing in the nose, and dry retching. Cinnamon Twig Decoction should be prescribed.

During taking the formula, raw and cold food, sticky and greasy food, meat and food made of wheat, pungent vegetables, alcohol, dairy products and food with pungent odor should be avoided

Q

Line 16 (A&B)

A

Tai Yang disease has lasted for three days, during which sweating has already been promoted. If the disease is still not resolved after promotion of vomiting, purging or using a warm needle, this is a deteriorated disease and it cannot be treated by Gui Zhi tang. One should examine the pulses, symptoms and signs and what mistake has been made and give treatment accordingly.

Gui Zhi tang is designed for resolving the flesh. If the patient has floating and tightness pulses, fever and the absence of sweating, it can not be prescribed. One should always remember this contradiction for not making a mistake.

17
Q

Line 17

A

Gui Zhi tang can not be given to an alcohol drinker who is sick, since it will induce vomiting. This is because the drinker is not suited to eating sweet things.

18
Q

Line 18

A

In a patient who ordinarily has asthma, panting is induced by invasion of wind-cold. A better result can be achieved by adding hou po and xing ren when prescribing gui zhi tang

19
Q

Line 19

A

If there is vomiting after taking gui zhi tang, there would be vomiting with blood and pus.

20
Q

Line 20

A

In tai yang disease, a small amount of incessant sweating occurs after sweating is promoted. The patient has aversion to wind, abnormal urination, and a slightly tight spasm in the limbs that affect his or her bending and stretching, gui zhi plus fu zi should be prescribed.

21
Q

Line 21

A

After being purged in tai yang disease, there is a hasty pulse and fullness in the chest, gui zhi tang should be prescribed.

22
Q

Line 22

A

If there is slight intolerance to cold, gui zhi tang minus bai shao plus fu zi should be prescribed.

23
Q

Line 23

A

Tai Yang disease has lasted for eight or nine days. A patient presents with malaria like symptoms and signs such as fever and aversion to cold, which occur two to three times a day. The fever lasts longer and is more intense than aversion to cold. The patient does not have vomiting and has normal bowel movements and or urination. If a slightly moderate pulse is felt, this means that the patient is about to recover; if a feeble pulse is felt and the patient has intolerance to cold, this indicates that there is deficiency in yin and yang. One should not further promote sweating, vomiting and purging. If a red face is observed instead, this denotes that there is no propensity for the disease to resolve automatically and because the patient has not got light sweat and there would be general itching half gui zhi tang half ma huang tang is appropriate.
