Taxis And Kinesis Responses Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is a taxis response?
A
A directional response to a stimulus
2
Q
What is a kinesis response?
A
A non-directional response to a stimulus
3
Q
What stimulates a kinesis response?
A
When an organism finds itself in unfavourable conditions
4
Q
Describe how an organism reacts during a kinesis response.
A
Makes rapid, random movements, turning frequently until, by chance, it finds itself in favourable conditions
5
Q
REQUIRED PRACTICAL 10
Describe how choice chambers can be used to investigate the effect of light on the movement of maggots.
A
- Set up the choice chambers with nothing in the base quarters as a control experiment and place mesh between the chamber and lid.
- Place 12 maggots in the chamber through the central hall using forceps, block the rest of the holes in the lid and the central hole with stoppers.
- Set a five minute timer and then record the number of maggots on the left and right half of the choice chamber.
- Repeat the control experiment another two times to calculate the number of maggots on each half of the choice chamber.
- To investigate the effect of light intensity, behalf of the choice chamber with black material to block out light.
- Place mesh between choice chamber and lid and place 12 maggots in the chamber through the central hall using forceps.
- Cover the dark half of the choice chamber with a black hood to block out any light and set a five minute timer.
- After five minutes, record the number of maggots in the dark and light halves and repeat two more times to calculate mean number of maggots.
- Ensure your results are displayed in a suitable table and draw a bar chart to represent the mean and standard deviations of your number of maggots then carry out statistical tests using your mean results using the Chi squared test
- Compare your Chi squared test result with your critical value at P<0.05 and determine whether the difference in mean number of maggots was significant or not.
