A
Morphology = grammatical words, affixes (study of how words are formed)
Syntax = combination of words in a sentence (order and arrangement of words to form a sentence)

What is ment by Consciousness-raising?

A

Making students aware of a certain structure without expecting them to implement it right away. When they are ready, they start using it automatically. Ellis therefore claims that practice is useless.
However, Dekeyser claims practice is important and speeds up the learning process.

What is deductive and inductive grammar teaching?

A

A deductive approach involves the learners being given a general rule, which is then applied to specific language examples and honed through practice exercises.

An inductive approach involves the learners detecting, or noticing, patterns and working out a ‘rule’ for themselves before they practise the language.

What is the teachability hypothesis?

A

Pienemann’s teachability hypothesis: Learners acquire grammatical structures in a fixed order, regardless of the order they were taught. Teaching a structure for which the student is not developmentally ready does not result in learning.

What is the difference between closed-ended and open-ended tests?

A

Closed-ended tests: One predetermined answer, easy to grade, students may only be able to produce the desired structure if they are asked specifically to do it (e.g. Multiple-choice, gap fills, matching)
Open-ended tests: Students have to produce a structure freely, more time consuming to grade, provides a clearer picture of a student’s knowledge (e.g. Sentence completion, sentence composition)

A

Students are given cues but have to answer freely (sentence rewrite, completion, translation).
