Teaching issues Flashcards

1
Q

You are due to attend a weekly IMT teaching, but for the past 4 weeks you have been told by your consultant not to attend the teaching due to significant staffing pressures on the ward.

The consultant has today again requested that you do not attend teaching and instead stay on the ward.

issues?

A

practical obligation to ensure juniors such as yourself are trained appropriately

Missing regular teaching opportunities could result in a lack of personal and professional development

If this situation has arisen due to a genuine medical emergency then clearly it would be inappropriate to leave the ward for teaching but this is unlikely to be the case on multiple occasions and instead likely represents a cultural or staffing issue in the department.

Q

How would you approach this situation?

A

raise your concerns with the consultant in question and if they are not willing to help, it may need to go further and involve other external figures such as your clinical supervisor (if this is a separate person) or your educational supervisor. If this is unsuccessful or the situation remains unresolved despite this, further escalation to your training programme director or head of department may help to resolve the situation.

submit an ‘exception report’ to make a paper trail of missed training opportunities

Q

How would you go about explaining your position to the consultant in question?

A

professional and non confrontational

. Reminding the consultant of the importance of teaching and your professional developmen

If necessary you could compromise that today you will remain on the ward but that you will be reporting the issue and expect it to be addressed

Looking for solutions may also help the Consultant and you to resolve the situation. For example, this could involve reviewing the rota of cover for the ward
