The initial staining of the artwork to form a base, tonal layer that allows the artist to more accurately place their colours

A
Sfumato is a painting technique for softening the transition between colours, mimicking an area beyond what the human eye is focusing on, or the out-of-focus plane. (eg. Mona Lisa)
