Techtonics Flashcards

1
Q

What is the structure of the earth

Why do tectonic plates move

A

Centre of the earth solid iron and Nickel called core
Around the core-mantle- semi molten rock that moves slowly
Outer layer-crust
Techtonic plates move because of convection currents which form because the mantle next to the core gets hotter and the heat rises up to the crust causing the molten rock to move slowly , when it gets to the crust it cools down again so goes back down

Q

How are fold mountains formed

A

Sediment builds up on the sea bed between two tectonic plates, turns into sedimentary rock, when plates meet rock gets crumpled and folded upwards to form fold mountains

Q

How have people adapted to the conditions in the alps

A

Farmers make terraces on the steep slopes as crops cant grow on the slopes
Goats are farmed on the slopes because they are well adapted to steep slopes

Q

What is uplift

What is the anticline and syncline

A

The process that creates fold mountains where sediment is pushed upwards by 2 continental plates moving together by convection currents
Anticline-rock folded upwards-old
Syncline -rock folded downwards-new
