Imagery
Helps the viewer to be able to imagine the text/ subject like it’s real
Personification
Gives human like values/ qualities to a non- human objects
Hyperbole
Emphasising to make something seem bigger than what it is/ exaggerating to create an emphasise on emotional effect. (I am so hungry I could eat a whole cow)
Simile
A comparison of two things using like or as
Metaphor
A comparison not using like or as (Freddy is a pig when he eats)
Onomatopoeia
Use of words that sound like the noise they make (zap, boom, bam, swish, ding)
Inclusive language
‘We’ ‘our’. Gets you involved on a personal level. (Help save our country)
Rhetorical question
A question asked to the reader that does not intend on getting an answer, but getting the reader to think instead.
Body language
Facial expressions, gestures, stance of position
Can convey the attitude, feelings or personality of the individual shown
Composition
The way the elements are deliberately placed in the image (foreground, background, centre, edges)
Colour and tone
Black and white images use contrast, light and darkness. (Shadows = evil, mystery, secrets)
Orientation and Point of View
Eye level, above or below subject
Salience
The part of the image that your eyes get drawn to first
Leading lines
Draws your eyes to the most important part/ element (roads/horizons/fences/ people pointing in a certain direction)
Juxtaposition
The state of being close together or side by side,not show comparison and contrast
Symbolism
Symbolic meanings/ functional meaning (Apple = food, but temptation and desire too)
Costume and makeup
Gender expectations
Uniforms show who they are
Written Codes
Gives a deeper insight into its purpose or meaning
Positioning
Foreground, middle, background (front= most important)
